Renting Rooftops in Exchange for Solar Panels

New Energy for Life has created a platform for homeowners and commercial property owners to rent out their rooftops to solar providers in exchange for a deal on solar panels. For a one-time fee of $50 a homeowner can list their roof as available to rent to solar providers and can be contacted to contract an agreement. Anyone anywhere in the world can use this site it's not just for North American visitors.

Three options are available to rooftop owners who want solar panels but also want to avoid the upfront costs. A solar installation company will contact you to discuss the best option for you and then get started with the process of installation.

The non-profit site also lets solar providers list their projects they would like to pursue and try to find homeowners and commercial properties who are agreeable to their terms.

Homeowners and commercial property owners should take the time to read the details in any contract or have your lawyer check out your contract before signing.

Good idea to check out their FAQS Page.

The American Apparel Method of Cleaning Solar Panels

American Apparel has installed 150 kilowatts of solar panels on their rooftop and have developed a unique cleaning method for panel maintenance. Our guess is that most panel installers wouldn't recommend this method to keep panels clean. As one reader commented in the article, this type of pressure on the panel can cause tiny fractures in the cells. Sliding off the rooftop panels would probably cause large fractures in your bones when using this method.

Possible Solar Panel Import Duties For Chinese Manufacturers

A decision by the U.S. Commerce Department will have Chinese solar panel manufacturers paying import duties of up to 5 percent. The mild duty on Chinese panels is in response to U.S. solar panel producers accusing the Chinese of government backing and dumping panels as well as solar cells onto the U.S. market.

The duties will be looked at and voted on by an independent government panel to before they begin in July. Other possible fines against the Chinese are "anti-dumping" tariffs based on the belief they're selling or dumping solar panels and cells onto the American market below market prices.

Chinese panel producers as well as some of their U.S. clients warn the anti-dumping fines could result in U.S. solar industry job loss and higher prices for consumers.

The Commerce Department expects a decision on the duties by the end of June.

Solar Electric Cabin

Here's an interesting example of using a small simple solar electric system to power up a small cabin. It's run on several solar panels, batteries, controller, inverter and a monitor for a couple of thousand dollars. This is a real life example of what the Solar Decathlon is about - building simple homes and using a light solar electric system to provide energy for vital appliances and light.

GM Idling Volt Production for Five Weeks

GM's spokesman Randy Fox said that GM has no intention of pulling the plug on the hyped and criticized Volt. Their "dreams do come true" forecast of getting 45,000 annual sales has crashed. Chevy has awakened to the fact that only 7,671 of the electric vehicles were sold in 2011 roughly 3 thousand less than forecast.

As a result, over a thousand workers were temporarily let go while GM delayed production of the Volt in order to adjust their inventory. The five week production halt is not a sign that GM is giving up on the Volt they maintain.

Chevy's compact Cruze offers 40mpg and costs half of what the Volt does currently and sales are booming. In addition, a new breed of "mild" or "micro" hybrids will cause people to pause before agreeing to buy the more expensive controversial Volt.

Car industry analysts are theorizing the public will consider getting milder cheaper versions of the Volt and Leaf if prices are lowered and safety is the top consideration.
