Use of Solar Trash Disposal Expands

BigBelly Solar
Chicago and other U.S. cities are continuing their use of solar powered trash cans. BigBelly Solar is the provider of these energy-saving cans (we've covered BigBelly Solar Trash Cans in an earlier post) and they have been expanding their presence in more cities. The city of Philadelphia has saved nearly $900,000 using these solar trash compactors and hopes to save up to $13 million over time. Chicago has more than 400 of these solar powered collectors and more cities are starting to use the BigBelly receptacles.

The solar trash collector/compactor uses a 12-volt battery powered by a solar panel to crush the garbage. By using more space in the collector cities reduce the number of times workers need to be sent out to empty the collectors saving on fuel. The collector also sends out a message to the city notifying them that it needs to be emptied.

There are various uses of solar trash disposal expands. The benefits of recycling are widely understood, with many communities and institutions highly motivated to adopt or expand recycling programs. Thanks!
