Grandson of flying legend Charles Lindbergh, Erik Lindbergh, has given PC-Aero and SolarWorld the Lindbergh Prize for Electric Aircraft Vision Award. Germany's PC-Aero is the developer of Elektra One a complete electric aircraft system that's also solar power enabled.
The crystalline solar technology manufactured by German based SolarWorld was used by PC-Aero to make Elektra One solar enabled. PC-Aero also created a solar powered hanger with pv panels on the rooftop to not only charge up the aircraft but also power the hanger itself. The excess energy will be fed back to the power grid.
This is the seventh award from the (LEAP) the Lindbergh Electric Aircraft Prize and was given out to representatives from SolarWorld and PC-Aero at the World Electric Aircraft Symposium in Oshkosh Wisconsin on July 29th 2011.
“This is an electrifying time,” Erik Lindbergh said in the release.
“Visionaries are taking risks. The field is alive with novel approaches
and rich in activity and experimentation. With continued intellectual
and financial investments, great opportunity exists for technological
advancements that could apply well beyond electric aircraft.”
Visit PC-Aero to read more about the award and Elektra One.
Here's a video showing the design of Elektra One.

Solar Powered Electric Vehicle Chargers by Solar City
Solar power installation and finance company SolarCity will be offering owners of electric vehicles a way to charge up their cars using solar power. The new solar powered electric vehicle charger SolarCity will be selling and installing is made by a company called ClipperCreek.
Owners of these vehicles typically plug in the vehicle in a home-based 120-volt wall outlet. The ClipperCreek EV (Electric Vehicle) charger Solar City will be installing will charge up the vehicle five times faster than plugging into the wall socket. The charger and installation will start at around $1,500.
SolarCity is offering homeowners installation of the 240-volt level 2 charger before they bring home their new electric vehicle. This option should calm the jitters of new EV owners who aren't quite sure how to go about charging up their new cars.
Analyzing the numbers show that a non-EV car owner would probably pay around $230 to $250 a month using gas. By switching over to an EV the cost reduces to approximately $107 per month if the vehicle is charged using juice from the grid.
CipperCreek Inc. President Dave Packard said “We are pleased to partner with SolarCity to help increase the number of homes and businesses that can run electric cars on renewable energy, roughly 40 percent of residential EV owners have solar and we expect these environmental and economic benefits to expand with the coming proliferation of electric cars and increasing use of solar power.”
ClipperCreek also provides electrical chargers for iconic auto companies such as Mercedes, BMW, GM, Nissan and Tesla Motors.
The rising cost of fuel will be causing more people to switch to electrical cars and start "driving on sunshine."

Solar Power on Camping Trips
Guest article by Judi Alfaro:
Using Solar Power on Camping Trips
By Judi Alfaro
Maybe you already heard the words, solar power systems. Many people think that this power is too expensive but that is many years ago. Nowadays, there are many affordable alternatives that can make you enjoy the sun's free energy. A lot of individuals love going on camps and if you are one of them, then you might want to take this power system.
But are these systems portable enough, reliable, readily available, and practical?
RV camping with solar power systems adds a tremendous amount of convenience. Many camping spaces are configured for access to an electrical hook-up, but this is useless during frequent power outages that remote locations suffer. A solar-capable RV will have energy even when the power grid is out.
You might also go with the RV camping without any access to electrical hook-ups. If this is the case, it is a must to have a solar power system. And before going to a camp, you should know you electrical requirements. You should also chose the right camping schedule to be sure that you will have a lot of sunshine. Batteries are charged through the system. And when you know the load, you will have to estimate the system's size. Then buy the necessary materials and start with the battery installation, solar panels, and even inverters. All of these are much needed to generate energy.
At this time, many solar power systems are available for RVs. Look around and you will definitely find one that suits your needs and budget. And you want to bring some electrical devices, calculating the total energy needs is important so you will not use all of the solar energy. Limit the electrical devices that you will bring. And besides, you will go on a camping and explore nature without the need of certain devices.
Furthermore, even if you do not camp with RVs, you can still use solar power systems to your advantage on camping trips. There are portable and lightweight units that can produce solar power. Flexible panels are also available which can be used on campsites and there you can spread on the ground to have direct sunlight. The produced power is just right to power a small light bulb as well as a heater. Special kinds of backpacks are also collecting sun's energy and converts it to electricity that are used for recharging you camera, cellular phone, and iPod.
Using this power is not only limited at offices homes, and big establishments. Today, it is possible to have it everywhere you go. Doing camping is much more fun when you bring solar power systems along with you. Forget all about generator that will consume fuel. Free electricity is gained with systems sold in the market. And in US, many household are using them and recognized solar power.
The next time you will go camping, you should make sure you have this power system. You also need to plan the camping carefully and be sure to choose the right day and date. When it is sunny, more energy is produced. Only bring essential and limited electrical devices. Solar-related power is much renewable and clean, you can definitely stay long in camping without getting worried with you energy consumption.
Going solar in times like these can be one of the best moves that we can make. With the way we are being bombarded by the different economic issues and struggles, making use of New Jersey Solar is the most practical thing to do.Article Source: [http://EzineArticles.com/?Using-Solar-Power-on-Camping-Trips&id=5511847] Using Solar Power on Camping Trips

Nokia Researching Solar Power for Mobile Phones
![]() |
| Lokki Test Phone |
The example they give is that a watch uses 1/1000 the power of a mobile phone even when the phone's screen is dark on stand-by. Power hungry phones make too many demands on cheap little solar panels that would be integrated into a phone. There are many solar chargers but can a solar powered phone be produced that will yield satisfactory results at a crowd pleasing price point.
Nokia's test subjects include a 16 yr old Swedish girl who will use the phone at scout camp, a man who will sail the Baltic Sea, a security guard in Kenya and a man who hikes around Lapland who will test to see how the phone operates under intermittent sunshine.
The challenge is on-can Nokia produce a mobile phone for an attractive price that is completely solar powered?
Follow the test subjects on Nokia's Solar Charging Blog.

Steam May Be Running Out For CSP Solar Projects
CNET has an interesting article on a couple of large solar installers that are planning to use photovoltaic panels rather than steam. Four California based solar thermal projects are dropping steam technology in favor of panels.
These large solar projects are being built by NextEra, AES Solar, K Road Power and Solar Millenium. In the end the decision to switch from CSP or Concentrating Solar Power to ever evolving solar panels comes down to upfront and maintenance costs.
As the article points out since 2008 the cost of solar panels has been reduced by half vs concentrated solar technology which has maintained it's price/costs over that same period. It's also easier to find financial backing when going with PV panels.
More info regarding PV panels vs CSP at CNET.com.

You can visit the program's website to download an application for review of eligibility.
