Ham Radio Clubs Discover Solar Power

It's only natural that ham radio operators would be drawn to using solar power. Quite often it's the amateur radio guys who are the only points of contact during emergencies.  During emergency situations when all the electricity is off they use gasoline powered generators to operate their equipment.

Last weekend the Southwest Missouri Amateur Radio Club tested their equipment using solar panels. The $4,000 worth of panels, two storage batteries and other equipment were on loan from Power Source Solar. The operators were pleasantly surprised they were able to make it through the night with that setup.

Steve Palmer, president of the Southwest Missouri Amateur Radio Club said using solar power to run their radio equipment is "the wave of the future." Palmer added the cost would have to come down before most ham radio clubs could it.

It was ham radio operators who provided the only communication from a Joplin Missouri hospital after the May 22nd tornado.

Adding solar power as a back up or even primary source of power strengthens the ability of these ham radio operators to get out emergency messages that can save lives.

Blythe Solar Power Project

Secretary of Energy Steven Chu announced the start of the world's largest solar power plant located in Blythe California. Blythe is located east of Palm Springs California. It will be home to a large concentrated solar thermal powered facility that is going to provide power for more than 300,000 homes.

The Department of Energy extended a conditional loan guarantee of $2.1 billion to finance this project that will produce 1,000 megawatts of solar power. Last Friday they broke ground on this project that is projected to generate 1000 construction jobs in the area.

Secretary Chu said it's going to take more steel to complete this plant then the amount of steel used to build San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. Steelworkers from all over the country should benefit from this project also according to Chu.

Parabolic trough technology will be used to collect the solar heat energy and refocus the radiation on a receiver tube located at the focal point of the mirror. The heated fluid circulates through a series of tubes and heat exchangers until finally the stored heat releases and generates high pressured steam. Steam is fed to a turbine generator where the electricity is produced.

Energy officials are calling the Blythe Solar Power Project the first true utility-scale solar power plant to be built in the United States. By 2013 the plant is expected to begin providing solar electric power to customers.

Solar Power for Landscape Projects

Summer is here and many people like to set up and maintain gardens and do landscaping. There are many different types of solar powered pumps you can use to irrigate the garden or lawn.  These solar pumps and controllers also are useful when traditional electrical hookups are not practical in remote locations.

This article by horticulturalist Tony Bertauski gives a brief overview of setting up solar panel(s) to control a valve and and controller as well as a few thoughts about solar lighting.

Southern California Edison Adding Solar Power Stations

Southern California Edison, one of the largest electrical utilities in the nation is redesigning and updating their electrical redistribution circuits. This redesign will allow SCE to build more large solar power plants near communities that will provide additional electricity on sunny and cloudy days.

In 2008 SCE proposed to integrate solar power stations into the local community power grid. By having engineers design new redistribution circuits the building of new working local solar power plants can be accomplished more quickly. Homeowners and businesses in the central coastal and southern California areas will now be using solar electricity.

SCE's five year plan includes the construction of 75 to 100 rooftop and ground mounted solar stations. The building out of these new power stations will provide an estimated 1,200 temporary construction jobs.

Some of these solar installations will be on leased warehouse rooftops and total to millions of square feet supporting tens of thousands of solar panels.

Southern California Edison's engineers are monitoring and analyzing the data being produced by the redesigned distribution circuits and neighborhood solar power stations. They're sharing this data with other electrical utilities and the solar power industry.

Everyone benefits when advances in technology ultimately results in lower costs to produce electricity and lower energy bills for residential and business customers.

By placing solar power stations in communities it becomes easier to transmit that electricity to local customers. This localization of solar power plants speeds up transmission, reduces costs and makes it easier on utilities to do repairs and upgrade technology.

Sunshine State Schools Receive Solar Panels

Boca Raton FL based VB Engineering, a solar power installation and design company, is installing 4000 solar panels on 100 area schools. The schools have been designated as hurricane shelters and the installations are being funded by a federal grant of $10 million to the Florida Solar Energy Center. The Florida Solar Energy Center is a state run research and solar system certification organization.

The schools will use the electricity produced by the panels on a regular basis which will save the districts money as well as provide emergency electricity in the event of a hurricane or other emergency situation.

VB Engineering says the panels are built to withstand a 150 per mile winds and is estimating the installations will be completed in eight months.

Smart Solar International's New Sun Tracking Solar Device

Japan's Smart Solar International has developed a different type of solar energy collection technology that can be produced at a lower cost because it uses less silicon. The device features rows of small sun tracking mirrors that reflect the energy back to a tube that is packed with high performance solar cells. The tube heats up to an optimum level and produces electricity as well as heats water with the excess energy..

The start-up company is planning production of these new unnamed sun tracking devices in August in Japan. The Japanese government has conducted a major policy review after the earthquake of March 11th and has decided to promote solar power as well as other alternative energy methods, not surprisingly.

Smart Solar International's Takashi Tomita says "We must send our product to the (disaster) regions first. I want to ship this as early as possible to convenience stores and to other facilities where people congregate."

Tomita also said the company has plans to develop markets for this technology in southern Asia as well as India and the Middle East.

SolarCity and U.S. Bancorp Partner to Finance Residential Solar Projects

U.S. Bancorp has announced that it is partnering with well known solar panel leasing company SolarCity to finance residential and commercial solar panel installations. The $158 million dollar joint fund will serve to finance SolarCity's "SolarLease" and "Power Purchase Agreement" programs. For many residential and commercial customers participation in these programs means they save more on their energy bills than going the traditional power company route.

SolarCity currently services 14,000 customers and will use this new funding to expand their offerings to more potential customers across America.

U.S. Bancorp is the parent company of U.S. Bank which is the 5th largest commercial bank in the United States. They're obviously making a statement by co-financing this fund that they believe solar power is going to be a major competitor in the alternative energy race.
