Hollywood Center Studios Using Solar Power

Hollywood Center Studios has installed solar power rooftop systems on several of it's stages. The systems will generate 350,000 kilowatt hours per year and help to reduce the studio's electricity bill. Hollywood Center Studios' stages five and six were built back in 1919 and included the type of windows that would let in natural light for the various productions that were filmed on those stages. Those stages have 384 rooftop modules while stages ten and eleven sport 700 panels.

Tim Mahoney the Vice President and COO said using solar energy to provide electricity for the studios helps to address some of their environmental concerns as well as the concerns of the production companies who use their production facilities. Another concern is keeping costs down for everyone using the studios. “We hope to slow electrical consumption, especially during peak hours, and that could have a significant effect on our energy costs."

The Los Angeles based company is replacing thousands of incandescent bulbs with low-power LED lights and pursuing other ways to reduce energy use as well as reduce their operating costs.

Many famous and popular movies, TV shows and commercials have been produced at the studio such as the first two seasons of I Love Lucy, Ozzie and Harriet, Green Acres, Everybody Loves Raymond, etc.

MIT's Soft Rocker Solar Powered Chair

Soft Rocker Solar Charging Chair
MIT's Soft Rocker Team, comprised of architects, engineers and designers have developed a solar powered chair called the Soft Rocker. It's made of softwood panels that form a loop with solar panels placed on the top of the chair. The chair's soft technology includes an integrated 12 amp battery that collects energy during the day and stores it at night. The chair tracks the sun as the person adjusts or repositions themselves in the chair.

The Soft Rocker allows any USB device to be charged up while users rest, work, communicate or socialize. The purpose and theory behind the design of the Soft Rocker is that it's a USB charging station in the form of tech inspired furniture. The designers are combining high and low tech as well as functionality to produce a unique social/work station. It's basically a large USB charger in the form of a chair. As long as we have this technology we might as well do something fun with it!

The MIT Soft Rocker team is led by Architect Professor Sheila Kennedy.

Wind Power 2011 Convention & Exhibition

Wind Power 2011 Convention & Exhibition is going on right now at the Anaheim Convention Center Anaheim CA. The trade show will feature companies that focus on manufacturing, sell and install wind turbines and other wind power related products and technologies.

One manufacturer was interviewed on financial network CNBC today and said he sold 1000 wind turbine units to a developer of a new residential community. The Wind powered units reach 30 feet tall so that will give the new development and interesting look or an unpleasant look depending on your point of view.

Speakers and hosts include controversial businessman Ted Turner, Jay Leno for entertainment, and will include typical conferences and educational sessions. To add interest, the show managers will unveil a "wind power themed" motorcycle at the convention similar to what Orange County Choppers does by making themed bikes for companies and events.

The wind power industry is struggling right now to gain attention. Natural gas, solar, clean coal, and other energy industries have stolen the spotlight leaving wind power having to try harder to get funding and backing from business, government and potential customers.

The convention is organized and sponsored by the American Wind Energy Association.

The trade show will be open Monday May 23rd through Wednesday May 25th 2011 at the Anaheim CA Convention Center.

Visit Wind Power 2011 Convention Site.

Lowe's to Offer Sungevity In-Store Solar Panel iQuote

Oakland CA based solar panel lease company Sungevity is partnering with home improvement giant Lowe's to provide in-store quotes for customers interested in leasing a solar panel system.  The system being used is called iQuote and provides customers the chance to see what a rooftop solar panel installation would look like on their home. The customer will be able to see the proposed installation in digital form and understand the savings related to going with Sungevity's solar lease program.

This in theory, saves the customer's time and effort by deciding to take advantage of the solar lease program while in the store instead of having technicians having to visit their home for an hours long introduction to the program.

Lowe's and Sungevity will be offering this new iQuote system in states where Sungevity already has a presence such as Arizona, California, New York, New Jersey, etc.

Chevy Volt Assembly Plant Chooses Solar Power

Southeast Michigan's largest solar photovoltaic plant will soon be powering up the assembly of Chevy's Volt. General Motors and DTE Energy are investment partners in financing the array that will be placed on a six acre tract of land that faces south for maximum exposure for the panels. The Detroit-Hamtramck 264,000 square foot plant will have an array that will generate 516-kilowatts of electricity, enough to charge up approximately 150 Chevy Volts everyday for a year.

The pv installation will save $15,000 a year under a 20 year easement agreement.

"Not only are we building the Green Car of the Year - the all new Chevy Volt electric car with extended range - we also are focusing on initiatives like reducing the plant's energy use and minimizing non-recycled waste." said Detroit-Hamtramck's plant manager Teri Quigley.

GM also uses hydro and landfill gas resources to run the manufacturing processes in the plant. Estimated time for the array to be completed is the end of this summer.

Solar Panels on Water-SPG's Floatovoltaics

SPG Solar since 2007 has been educating city administrators, winery owners, industrial mine owners, etc to the benefits of using a floating solar panel system. Often, business owners want to use solar technology but have niche businesses which don't adapt well to traditional solar panel installations. The idea of using floating solar panels or "Floatovoltaics" as SPG Solar calls its system, may be a good answer for these types of businesses.

Far Niente Winery is one of businesses taking advantage of SPG's floating solar panel system. They have an irrigation pond that holds 994 solar panels that rest on pontoons. "Vineyard land in this part of the Napa Valley runs somewhere between $200,000 and $300,000 an acre," said Larry Maguire, Far Niente's chief executive. "We wanted to go solar but we didn't want to pull out vines."

SPG is also in talks with an owner of an industrial gravel mine in California to perhaps provide it Floatovoltaics to float in a settling pond where it the traditional solar panels would be a distraction and not practical.

There are other companies who do the floating solar panels as well. Floating solar panels can provide a niche energy cost cutting solution as well as help to stop water from evaporating if that is a problem.

Sterilizing Medical Instuments Using Solar Power

Rice Uni's Capteur Soliel
Students at Rice University have been working on a way to use the sun's rays for sterilization of medical instruments being used in third world countries. They have been modifying a device created by French inventor Jean Boubour called Capteur Soleil. This device was meant to capture the sun's energy in areas where it would normally be difficult to do so. Rice Uni students modified the device to the point it became a functional stove top.

The heat is collected using curved mirrors and insulated box containing an autoclave. An autoclave is a container or device that produces steam that sterilizes medical instruments. In this case the students directed the steam produced to heat up a conductive hotplate. They can easily get the temperature in the autoclave up to Center for Disease Control heat standards which is 121 Celsius for at least 30 minutes.

Any user can adjust the Capteur Soleil so that it collects the sun's rays more efficiently and heats up more quickly. Using the mid-day sun they found they can heat up the device in 40 minutes to an hour. They've sterilized tools and syringes as well as heated up biological spores which after a 24 hour incubation period came back negative for growth.

Doug Schuler, the student's faculty adviser said they are already using another version of the Capteur Soleil to cook food in Haiti and that this experiment is part of a larger project they have planned.

EcoVantage-New Energy Saving Incandescent Light Bulb

Philips has unveiled it's new energy saving incandescent light bulb called EcoVantage. This bulb will meet energy efficiency standards set by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. It won't be as energy efficient as compact fluorescent bulbs but will produce a brighter light.  Philips hopes that will appeal to people who want to save energy but also want a better quality of light than a compact bulb produces.

The EcoVantage bulb uses halogen elements and technology to produce better light quality than a compact fluorescent. Another positive for this line of bulbs is that they don't have mercury inside them which most compact fluorescent bulbs do. If a compact bulb is dropped and breaks open the mercury inside spills on the surface and an emergency clean-up is required to safely get rid of the poisonous substance.

Wattage Conversion Rates for EcoVantage:

  -  43W replaces a 60W incandescent bulb   -  53W replaces a 75W incandescent bulb
  -  72W replaces a 100W incandescent bulb

Philips claims using this bulb will produce a 25% to 28% reduction in energy costs.

The EcoVantage bulb is available at Home Depot and is currently listed for sale on Amazon.com.
