Solar Power International News
Solar Power International 2010 was a big hit according to the latest stats. There were 1,122 companies attending this year compared to 929 in '09. 2010 conference attendees totaled 23,300 and the entire trade show took up over 1 million square feet of space at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
International solar industry companies made up 32% of exhibitors and were from 111 countries.
Industry Announcements from the Conference:
SEIA and GTM Research's U.S. Solar Market Insight midyear report showed growth of the U.S. solar market for the first half of 2010 and forecasted growth for 2010 and for the next 5 years.
SEIA and SCHOTT Solar's Barometer annual public opinion poll found that 94 percent of Americans think it is important for the US to develop and use solar energy and 80 percent thought Congress should consider shifting subsidies for fossil fuels to solar.
The Solar Foundation's first census of the U.S. solar workforce in the United States, showed that hiring in the solar workforce, currently 93,000, is expected to grow 26 percent over the next year.
"While oil and gas remain a necessity, our nation's future depends on our ability to capture the power of renewable energy," said Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, who spoke at the Solar Power International 2010 Conference and also signed a Record of Decision approving the construction of Nevada's first large-scale solar project on public lands.
"Solar energy is the fastest-growing new energy source in the United States and is driving job creation and investment in all 50 states," said Rhone Resch, president and CEO of SEIA. "But to reach a goal of installing 10 gigawatts of solar capacity every year by 2015, the solar industry needs to unite as a team, fight for policies to create a level playing field and remind our lawmakers that solar is an industry, not an issue. We hope people left Solar Power International excited about the future of our industry and energized to ignite change."
"We strive to make this show relevant to solar veterans and newcomers alike, and relish the annual opportunity to bring together people with diverse business perspectives who share a common interest in solar energy," said Julia Hamm, president and CEO of SEPA. "We're proud that Solar Power International, a bellwether for the growth of the solar market overall, continues to grow in size and diversity, and that it was recognized as the fastest growing show across all industries that exhibitors are flocking to by Trade Show Executive magazine."
Solar Power International 2011 will take place October 18 - 20th in Dallas Texas.

World's Largest Solar Thermal Facility in Ivanpah California
Work has already begun on what will be the largest solar thermal plant in the world. The facility is being built in Ivanpah in California's Mohave desert 5 miles from the Nevada border. NRG Engergy Inc. is partnering with BrightSource Energy as the largest investor in the 320 megawatt solar electric generation plant. NRG's investment will reach the $300 Million mark over the next 3 years.
Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System is being constructed in three phases and is expected to be fully operational in 2013. The U.S. Department of Energy is committing $1.375 billion to the project in the form of a loan guarantee.
At least 1000 people will be employed building the Ivanpah solar facility and it will supply power for more than 140,000 homes.
Electricity from Ivanpah will be sold under multiple power purchase agreements, each of 20-25 years duration with Southern California Edison and Pacific Gas and Electric Co.—nearly doubling the amount of commercial solar thermal energy now generated in the United States.
“Solar power is a cornerstone of our strategy to produce and deliver clean, zero-emission products and services to America’s growing number of clean energy consumers,” said David Crane, President and CEO of NRG Energy. “The ambition and scale of Ivanpah, capitalizing on California’s natural solar resource and demand for renewable energy, shows how far we have come in scaling up solar generation and in deploying cutting-edge American technology, creating in the process thousands of American jobs.”

Preparing Your Home for Winter
4 Tips For Preparing Your Home For Winter
By Cecil Flynn
The cold winds come upon us fast, are you ready? Have you done what it takes to prepare your home and yard for heavy snow and ice, not to mention stiff winds? If you want to have a safe and comfortable winter you need to prepare now.
After enjoying a warm summer, the last thing we want to think about is bundling up to stay warm. But that is exactly what your home needs. A little tender loving care given to your home now will help you stay toasty warm and safe all winter long.
1. Seal the Gaps
It is amazing where the drafts come from. Cold air can seep in around window seams, door jambs and even electrical outlets that are positions on outside walls. Seal up windows by applying a thin bead of silicone caulking along the joint of the window and window seal. This type of caulking will provide an airtight, flexible seal. It is important for the seal to be flexible so it can expand and contract with the temperature changes.
Apply weather stripping around drafty door jams and use silicone caulk along the bottom of the door where it meets the floor. If you have carpeting up to the door, apply the caulking on the outside of the door, just under the threshold.
For electrical outlets, you can buy foam outlet sealers. These pre-cut seals are made of a thin foam material. They are standard size and easy to install. Just remove the outer plate and put the foam insulators in the outlet box. These are great for stopping drafts and can be found at most home improvement stores.
2. Insulate
Most homes lose a large amount of heat through the roof and foundation. Take some time to check on the condition of your insulation and consider adding more if necessary. This is a job that can be contracted to a professional or you can do it yourself. Most home improvement stores have information about how to insulate your home properly.
3. Check the Roof
Can your roof withstand the weight of snow and ice? Snow may look fluffy and soft, but it is heavy! Many times you will see reports on the news about collapsed roofs on homes because of the weight of snow. It would be wise to add heat tape or another type of ice melt along the bottom of your roof to help promote the melting of ice and snow and lessen the load on your roof.
4. Trim the Limbs
The winter snow and ice can create havoc with tree limbs. Especially those that hang over power lines or buildings. If you have large limbs that could pose a threat to either of these things, now is the time to trim them. You don't want to have to deal with the extensive damage that can be caused by heavy limbs falling on your or your neighbor's home!
In addition to these four tips, always have ice melt and a snow shovel on hand. Winter storms can take you by surprise, but if you are prepared you can stay snug as can be in your nice warm home!

Solar Powered Parking Meters-Money in the Bank for Los Angeles
![]() |
| IPS Parking Meter |
They recently announced they've completed installing 10,000 new solar powered parking meters in Los Angeles.
The meter's wireless networking capabilities allow it to receive credit/debt cards and have a centralized meter management system approve transactions in real-time.
IPS boasts the meters are virtually vandal-proof and fit right in with already existing traditional single space parking meters. The existing poles are used to mount the new solar powered meters saving money and effort.
Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa announced recently that the meters are producing more income for Los Angeles and have exceeded his expectations. In September alone, the newly installed meters generated $230,000 in additional net revenue. If the trend continues, the meters could generate an additional $2 – 2.5 million in revenue annually, which is almost double what the Los Angeles Department of Transportation originally projected.
The meters are leased-to-own saving municipalities from shelling out a lot of money to purchase them right off the bat.
In addition to California showcasing the meters, cities such as Denver, CO, Washington, DC and Eugene, OR are enjoying the same enhanced revenue and strong public support, said the IPS Group. They currently have meters in 45 cities in the United States and Canada.

MIT Team Develops Solar Powered Desalination System
MIT's Field and Space Robotics Laboratory team has developed a solar powered prototype desalination system for rapid deployment during emergency situations. The system runs on reverse osmosis and is capable of producing 80 gallons of clean water per day.
The team designed the system to help remote areas and areas in crisis where electricity may or may not be working. A larger system would cost approx. $8,000 and provide 1000 gallons of water per day. Students have calculated that a cargo plane carrying just 24 of the larger units could provide clean water for 10,000 people.
They've also programmed the system's computer to adjust it's components for optimal performance during various weather conditions. So that clean water can still be produced on cloudy days.
The students will be monitoring data and modifying the system to produce a robust solution that will be accurate, useful and easy to assemble for use.
Here's a quickie video of the desalination sequence:

Stress Tests for U.S. Solar Start Ups
“The solar market has changed so much it’s almost enough to make you want to cry,” said Joseph Laia, chief executive of MiaSole. “We have spent a lot more time and energy focusing on costs a year or two before we thought we had to.”
The U.S. solar power industry has started blooming at a time when there's a lot of bloomin' competition, partly from the Germans and Spanish and primarily from the Chinese. Germany was already using solar power while the U.S. was still mulling over whether it would be worth it.
While we were wondering if we should use corn for fuel, the Chinese government read what was happening and figured out all it had to do was fund their home grown solar industry. As a result American solar start-ups are facing serious growing pains as expressed by Joseph Laia of MiaSole.
The high and rigorous output of solar panels by the Chinese is pressuring U.S. manufacturers to step up investor funding and or change their business model.
Competition from the government backed Chinese has brought the price of modules down by 40% forcing American companies to justify their more pricey products to the consumer.
Angel investors are more hesitant now to back U.S. solar power companies as a result of the Chinese flooding the market with cheaper panels. They supply approximately 40% of panels to the California market.
Our troubled U.S. economy is making it difficult for U.S. companies to get the financial backing they need to go forward with large projects, First Solar being one of them. They have more than two gigawatts of solar powered plants ready to go but won't develop them until they have a buyer.
Competition, growing pains and a hesitant economy are forcing American solar firms to go back to the drawing board and rethink their business models.

Schwarzenegger-October 2010 is Solar Energy Month
California Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger has proclaimed October 2010 as "Solar Energy Month."
The Proclamation
10/01/2010
The Proclamation
10/01/2010
October 2010, as “Solar Energy Month.”
PROCLAMATION
by the
Governor of the State of California
California is proud to be leading the nation in the development of alternative power sources. We can use the sun’s natural energy to power our homes, businesses and public facilities, as well as create jobs for our fast growing green industry.
An aerial view of our state reveals that solar technology is starting to power more of our buildings and residences. It is not uncommon to see rows of solar panels on the roofs of factories and houses across our Central Valley and under the California Solar Initiative we are moving towards our goal of installing 1 million more roof systems by 2018. This will reduce dangerous green house gas emissions by over 3 million tons. Clean energy not only reduces homeowners’ monthly bills, but it also brings money and jobs into our state.
By taking bold steps to reduce our energy dependence we are also bolstering our economy. California is proud to have many firms committed to expanding our already strong solar industry. Green technologies are creating new jobs every day and I am pleased that California can harness the economic potential of clean investment. By 2020, renewable energy will account for thirty-three percent of our power consumption.
This month, I urge all Californians to learn more about the environmental and economic benefits of renewable technologies and how solar energy can be integrated into our lives and businesses. Solar power is an important clean energy source for reaching our climate change goals and preserving California’s future.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim October 2010, as “Solar Energy Month.”
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 24th day of September 2010.
ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER
Governor of California

White House to Install Solar Panels
Recently we posted about the Obama White House refusing to put solar panels on the roof. It looks like the President has reconsidered the use of solar power. It was announced Tuesday October 5th that by the Department of Energy that solar panels will be installed on the White House roof.
A month ago students from Unity College visited the White House to try and convince them to install solar panels on the roof similar to what ex President Carter had done more than 30 years ago. At that time the White House refused the request.
But, on October 5th 2010 Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced that indeed solar panels will be installed on the roof as well as a solar powered water heater.
Chu commented "This project reflects President Obama's strong commitment to U.S. leadership in solar energy and the jobs it will create here at home," said Secretary Chu. "Deploying solar energy technologies across the country will help America lead the global economy for years to come."
By installing solar panels on arguably the most famous house in the country, his residence, the President is underscoring that commitment to lead and the promise and importance of renewable energy in the United States."
The photovoltaic system will convert sunlight directly to electricity. The solar hot water heater will have a solar collector facing the sun that will heat water for use in the White House Residence. The Department of Energy will now begin a competitive procurement process to select the company responsible for the installations.
This announcement is made on the one-year anniversary of President Obama's Executive Order 13514 on Leadership in Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance, which called on the Federal Government to lead by example towards a clean energy economy and reduce, measure and report direct and indirect greenhouse gas pollution. In support of this goal, the Department of Energy also released "Procuring Solar Energy: A Guide for Federal Facility Decision Makers" to support the use of solar energy throughout the Federal Government.
