Inception-Green Movie Making

Leonardo DiCaprio's film "Inception" was made with the help of solar energy. The actor had talked to an executive at Warner Brothers studio about the idea of using solar power to run the generators used on the set.

The generators used were from Pure Power Distribution, a company that provides mobile solar power systems for use by residences to large scale productions like the Inception film set. Their S48T model used on the set of Inception includes 36 200 watt solar panels that use 600 amps to produce 72,000 watts of mobile solar power.

Pure Power Distribution has also provided solar powered generators for the Teen Choice Awards and ESPY Awards.

For more details on the DiCaprio film Inception using solar powered generators on it's set check out the article at:

The solar powered up mansion features the traditional solar rooftop panels that will generate electricity for the cabana, pool, house as well as a revolving compost heap!

Solar News Briefs For July 15th '10

Here are a several solar power related news briefs of interest:

* Envision Solar, a San Diego based solar company that has solarized carports has now developed "LifeVillage." These are solar powered portable temporary steel framed structures that can be used as housing when an emergency has destoyed homes or people cannot get back to their homes because of delays. More at Envision Solar.

* Solar power manufacturing companies are finding it hard in a down economy to get "angel investor" funding. The solar industry is considered a consolidating industry as companies partner and merge with other solar companies. Angel investors want to get out of their commitment within 3 years in this slow economy. New companies wanting investment money must be licensed, already have capital, have their patents protected and maintain good relationships with other solar powered related supply companies.
More at Knoxville News.

* Western ranches are saying Goodbye Windmills and hello Solar Well Pumps! When a rancher wants to open up his grazing land for cattle and the old windmill he's using has broken down, he'll probably choose to replace it with a solar well pump.

Windmills are made up of many parts that break down over the years. Ranchers are impressed with the technological improvements of the modern solar well pumps and plan to go with those over buying new windmills. Stand-alone solar well systems allow cattle to graze and still have the water they require.

Nokero-World's First Solar Powered Light Bulb?

Third world residents and campers worldwide will be interested in Denver based inventor Stephen Katsaros' solar powered light bulb named "Nokero."  A lifelong "tinkerer," Katsaros has developed a simple bulb that's powered by sunlight. He hopes that people in developing countries will eventually migrate to his bulb and give up the kerosene lamps they are currently using.

A quarter of the world's population is still burning fuel for light and those light sources emit 190 million tons of carbon dioxide. Not to mention candles and kerosene lamps are potential sources for starting life threatening fires.

Katsaros's manufacturing process is lean to the point he can sell the bulb's for $15 per bulb retail and approx. $6 if bought in bulk. Many of the world's people who he envisions using these bulbs on a daily basis live on $2 a day so the bulb design is simple and cost effective.

Fully charged, the Nokero bulb provides approximately 4 hours of light and lasts 2 years. It's rainproof, shatter-resistant and has replaceable parts giving the bulb a potential to last for years.

Here are more details from Stephen Katsaros' interview at the Denver Post.

Here's his site for the solar powered bulb the Nokero.

Solar Impulse - Solar Night Flight Completed

The solar powered light plane "Solar Impulse" is at it again. The Impulse became the first solar powered plane to make an overnight flight without fuel. The flight took over 26 hours to complete with the flight taking place near the Swiss Alps.

Swiss pilot Andre Borschberg expressed excitement about watching the plane's energy levels rise and dip according to the available sunlight:

"Just sitting there and watching the battery charge level rise and rise thanks to the sun… And then that suspense, not knowing whether we were going to manage to stay up in the air the whole night. And finally the joy of seeing the sun rise and feeling the energy beginning to circulate in the solar panels again," he said."

Team flight leader Claude Nicollier said at this time it's not possible to fly the plane on autopilot so there's no "snoozing" on the Impulse.

“It reacts slowly as it has entirely manual controls – push rods, cables and direct input mechanisms. You have to get used to it as there is a tendency to overcompensate.”

More at Solar Impulse.

At Swiss Info.com there's a interesting article on the realistic future of using solar power to fuel planes. The heavier the plane the more problems the flight teams will encounter and the thought of ever having a heavyweight solar powered passenger plane is not practical according to this piece.

However the Chinese use electrical planes for flight instruction and they have a 45 minute run. Hangers could install solar panels on the roof and charge the batteries of these planes.

Interesting stuff!

Here is that article discussing solar powered flight at SwissInfo.com.

Coulomb Technologies ChargePoint Network

Campbell California based Coulomb Technologies has developed a worldwide network of electric vehicle charging stations called the ChargePoint Network. The stations can be located at independent retailers, municipalities, and private homes.

Owners of electric vehicles who have internet access or can download their charging station finder APP can find out where charging stations are located using their site map.

In order to use Coulomb's ChargePoint Network you must purchase a ChargePass Card. One type of station allows you to bring your cord and plug it into a charging station. Another allows you to use the cord the charging station provides. Either way you pass the ChargePass Card over the station's "lock image" icon and that reads your card data, allowing the charging to begin.

The station detects if the cord is fully plugged in or else charging will not begin. Customers have access to text messages warning of a failure to recharge and 24/7 customer support. Firmware updates will be available for all stations as technological upgrades occur.

Coulomb Technologies and other charging station providers are forecasting millions of electric vehicles will be on the road in the next five years all over the world.

Here is the site for Coulomb Technologies.

Here's the page illustrating how to use their Charging Stations:

Green Architecture Prototype: The Dice House

British enviro-architectural firm Sybarite has unveiled their vision of a green-solar powered-zero emissions house known as The Dice House. Shaped like game-board dice, the futuristic house has a plastic-based photovoltaic umbrella that caps the top and provides hot energy to heat a water tank that produces 80 gallons a day.

Sybarite claims this house can self-generate 33 kilowatts of electricity per day. One side of the house absorbs heat during the day keeping the home at steady temperatures all day.

This is without a doubt a sci-fi movie looking house that will attract some and repel others. Whether homes like this will actually come to fruition on a large scale remains to be seen. Probably resembles the type of home George Jetson's grandfather would live in!
