DIY 60/40 Solar Oven Design

Naddycat | April 02, 2009 | 7:35

UPDATE: This oven hit 340 degrees!

Hi,

This is my new solar oven.
The other day I baked 5 potatoes in it and the taste is incredible.
It was 60 deg outside and within 2 minutes the temp rose to 100 deg.
After fifteen minutes the temp was 180 deg and within an hour it reached 240 deg!
I was very excited to break the 212 temp.

This design is called the 60/40 solar oven. 40 degrees is the angle of the side reflectors (The ones in between the straight edges.) 60 degrees is the angle that the reflectors sit in reference to the oven itself. NO aerosol paint used inside the oven, only heavy foil and Elmers natural glue.

I'm always happy to hear from anyone who wants to write me.

***  The above message is from the inventor of the oven as seen on Youtube.

American Solar Challenge is On!

The American Solar Challenge is an event that challenges university students to design and build a solar powered race car. The fun part is racing the cars against other teams in the challenge.

University students from all over the country can build their team cars by learning technical, engineering and mechanical problem solving as related to designing and building solar cars. These student participants are expected to be the next generations of scientists and engineers who will advance the design and mechanical capabilities of future solar powered vehicles.

The race started with 12 teams on Sunday June 20th. From Broken Arrow OK the participants will race their cars north to the final destination of Naperville IL on Saturday June 26th.

Racers will have to compete the 1,100 mile race against teams from Michigan, Texas, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota and Calgary to name a few.

Sponsors include Caterpillar and Columbia Sportswear.

Here's a map of the race route at American Solar Challenge Route.

Suntricity Power Offering Volume Discounts

Suntricity Power Corp., a solar panel installation company based in Delaware has introduced a new volume discount program for residential neighborhoods. Suntricity is encouraging homeowners, municipalities, homeowner associations, etc. to gather together and have meetings where they discuss the benefits of adding solar panel systems to their homes. The company is now offering volume discounts for neighbors who want to band together and buy their solar powered systems as a group rather than as single residences.

Called "The Suntricity Power Neighborhood Solar Program" homeowners can now realize volume discounts on solar panel installations as a group of residences in neighborhoods. They'll receive discounts and rebates as a part of a group purchase program. The new group volume buying program began Monday June 14th.

Solar Powered Shrub Mobile!

Justin Shull claims he has created a solar powered vehicle that he's covered in shrubbery. He calls the odd little car the "Terrestrial Shrub Rover."

The Terrestrial Shrub Rover as appears in the video on his site is covered in foliage from bumper to bumper. As a result he has mounted video cams on the front that let him see where he's going by watching the video screens positioned in front of the driver.

Shull claims this solar electric powered rover is "presents the opportunity to explore terrestrial and social environments." OK.

Usually solar panels require the suns rays to hit them nice and cleanly. This Shrub Rover appears to be covered almost completely provoking questions such as how is this being charged up when it's completely covered in foliage?  Or, is he using a solar generator to charge up an electrical car that has no panels on it?

It appears that the mysteries of the Terrestrial Shrub Rover will never cease!

The video is comical in the sense it reminds one of comedies where this type of vehicle would be used to disguise the main character. I can see Lucy and Ethel riding in one of these through Hollywood to get a photo of some movie star.

Check out the Shrub Rover Video at his site at JustinShull.us.

Apparel Companies Making Solar Power Stylish

Los Angeles based Pacific Blue Dye House a garment dye and wash house for several clothes manufacturers such as Ella Moss, Splendid, Affliction, etc. has installed 616 solar panels on their factory roof.

The panels will provide between 80 and 85% of the 30K square foot facilities electricity needs. Los Angeles Department of Water has approved a rate hike of 5% beginning July 1st which is motivating co-owner Dotan Shoham to look into increasing his investment in solar power. Even though his roof has 616 panels that covers only 30% of his roof, those panels provide 80% to 85% of the warehouse's energy. The cost was $250K and took 4 months to install.

Pacific Blue also has a 4,000 gallon water tank they would like to have heated by way of thermal solar and are figuring that one out also.

Other garment companies such as Sole Technology are also going with solar panels as a way to deal with the water rate hikes.

Ten years or even 5 years ago garment manufacturers wouldn't have even considered linking their brands to the subject of solar power. In 2010, Shoham's Gypsy '05 knitwear label will carry a tag that informs consumers that the garment their looking at was made in a solar-powered facility.

Fashionistas now go with solar power!

Japan, The Moon, Robots and The Luna Ring

I think the moon is turning Japanese-I really think so. A little play on the old pop song from 1980.

Japan has big plans for the moon. The Japanese plan on sending robots to build shelters for themselves (the robots that is) as well as building a solar power transmission plant on moon! The first robot built structure will serve as a base for exploring the solar system.

They plan to send the robots to the moon around 2015 where the robots will build an unmanned base by 2020. The project will cost an estimated $2.2 and each robot will collect rocks, survey and photograph the surface of the moon. The plan is to have them return to Japan via a rocket. They will then return to the moon to build themselves a base at the Moon's South Pole.

Just in case the robots get bored, the Japanese construction company Shimizu Corporation has a plan to let the robots build the largest known solar power transmission plant, for lack of a better term. The project is called "The Luna Ring" which they're calling an inexhaustible, nonpolluting solar energy generating concept that will transmit beams to earth 24/7.

The tireless robots will excavate the surface and build a "solar belt" around the entire lunar equator. Many machines and equipment needed for this project will be built in space and then landed on the moon's surface for placement.

Oh, and a few human astronauts will supervise the robots just in case things get out of hand! Water? What about water you're asking? The plan for water is to "reduce" lunar soil with hydrogen brought over from earth. Cement will be made from lunar soil and gravel.

The Luna Ring or solar belt will be comprised of countless solar cells. Cables will then transport the electrical power from the belt to transmission facilities. Microwave power antennas will transmit to receiving "rectennas." Then laser powered transmission facilities will beam the energy back to earth. The hope is all this technology will supply all the earth's energy needs.

As you can imagine there are many skeptics mocking these plans. But, you have to admit, when the Japanese dream, they dream big!

There are more details to these two stories.

To read more about the Japanese government's plans to build a base on the moon visit the story at CNET.
