Researchers-Gallium Arsenide Twice As Efficient As Silicon

University of Illinois professors say that silicon, the typical semiconductor used in most photovoltaic panels is less efficient than semiconductor gallium arsenide. Professors John Rogers and Xiuling Li are researching ways to create thin film from semiconductor gallium arsenide. Gallium Arsenide is typically used by applying a small film to a wafer form but in that form it's not nearly as efficient as it could be.

They are stacking these films on a wafer and then exposing them to varying heat ranges. Then comes bathing the stacks in solutions and going through other processes and creating more material using the wafer. That material can then be transferred away from the wafer to plastic, glass, etc. The eventual aim is to create a flexible thin film that can be used for electronics and high performance devices using this more efficient semiconductor.

More details here at Before It's News.

Toyota Coporation Partners With Tesla Motors

Toyota Corporation has given a boost to Tesla  Motors by investing $50 million dollars in the  struggling electric car maker. The investment announced Thursday will go to help Tesla Motors buy the NUMMI auto plant located in Freemont CA approximately 45 minutes to the south of San Francisco California.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger And Tesla Motors Make AnnouncementThe NUMMI plant was a joint venture between General Motors and Toyota in 1984 and recently closed down. It was California's last auto manufacturing plant. This deal will allow Tesla Motors to start making it's electric cars in conjunction with Toyota at the NUMMI plant in a smaller area of the massive factory. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has a goal to produce 20K electric vehicles per year.

The vehicles will be Toyota cars and have Tesla drive-trains. The first car will be a sedan called the Model S. (see photo) and plans for production are in mid-2012 with a $50K price tag.

The city of Downey California had previously tried to get Tesla Motors to open a S Model plant in their city. Knowing it would bring jobs and an economic boost to their area. Freemont is grateful for the NUMMI plant reopening as new jobs will be opening up and Tesla plans on hiring former plant workers. Musk says the plant is union-neutral and isn't for or against workers organizing.

More details of the partnership between Toyota and Tesla Motors here at the San Francisco Chronicle.

Non-Toxic Recyclable CPV System

Morgan Solar, a Toronto based manufacturer of a "High Concentrated Photovoltaic" system they call " Sun Simba HCPV." This particular system is not for residential use and only intended for use in large scale solar farms. The materials in these panels Morgan Solar claims are non-toxic and 100% recyclable.

Their system doesn't use prisms, lenses or mirrors.

The material they use is called "Light-guide Solar Optic." They claim it has the power of up to 1400 suns of concentration, rugged, low cost, recyclable and non-toxic. Their sun energy delivery system is interesting. Light hits the top of the Light-guide Solar Optic and is dispersed from within the optic to high efficiency solar cells that are mounted on the edge.

One of the criticisms of solar powered products is that they are toxic. If Morgan Solar's claims are true we now have non-toxic materials from which to produce solar power products and systems that are also recyclable. People without vision are always the first to criticize and condemn something or someone. What they are unable to realize with their tiny monkey brains is that technology marches on despite their personal views. Shocking.

People with intelligence and vision look for ways to deal with the problems at hand. That's why we have research and development departments. Instead of condemnation look up and support individuals and companies who study and come up with solutions to these problems.

Morgan Solar is still in the investment and development stage hoping for a 2011 date on delivery of their systems.

Here's an overview of latest developments at their Morgan Solar Product Page.

Japanese Solar Sail Spacecraft IKAROS to Launch Tuesday May 18th

JAXA, The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency is getting ready to launch the Venus Climate Orbiter "Akatsuki" on May 18th. It's launching partner will be a Small Solar Power Sail Demonstrator "IKAROS." The two vessels will move to the launch pad May 17th.

IKAROS or Interplanetary Kite-craft Accelerated by Radiation Of the Sun is a "Solar Sail." The term Solar Sail means, in this case, a spaceship with a large membrane that gathers and uses sunlight to propel it through space. The solar power aspect comes from the thin film solar cells on the membrane. This is a "demonstrator" craft. So, if the ion-propulsion engines are driven by the solar cells, they can become a hybrid engine that's combined with photon acceleration that will conserve fuel.

A solar sail can move forward without consuming propellant as long as it can generate enough energy from sunlight.

The IKAROS weighs approximately 700 pounds and at the sail's diagonal stretches 66 feet. Not only are thin film cells attached to the membrane but also an attitude control device as well scientific observation sensors.

Both the Akatsuki and the IKAROS are being sent toward Venus. If things go well, the IKAROS will continue it's 3 year journey to orbit the far side of the sun.

The launch of the Akatsuki and the IKAROS will take place Tuesday May 18th at Tanegashima Space Center.

Solar Trash Compactors Texting City Workers

City workers in Lodi and Santa Cruz California are receiving text messages from garbage cans. No, these workers are not lonely and in need of friends, they're being told by each "Big Belly" solar compactor/trash can when they need to be emptied.

Each Big Belly compactor costs $4,000. The city of Lodi California received stimulus money to purchase the Big Bellys and expect them to start paying for themselves in 2 to 21/2 years.

When the trash cans have compacted enough trash and are at full capacity, they send a text message to city workers that they need to be emptied. The workers can now make better use of their time without having to stop and check each can to see if its full.

Philadelphia estimates it will save approximately $13 Mil. over a 10 yr period using the solar compactors.

A few "Big Belly" Facts:

  • Compaction Ratio: BigBelly holds up to five times the volume of ordinary trash receptacles
  • Force: BigBelly's compaction mechanism exerts 1,200 pounds of force
  • Energy Efficiency: BigBelly gets 100% of its energy from the sun and uses less than 5 watt hours/day
  • BigBelly can operate for a week on the equivalent energy it takes to make a pot of coffee!
  • The first BigBelly was installed in Vail, Colorado in 2004.
  • BigBelly Solar has over 40 distributors in the US and around the world.
  • The newest model of BigBelly is 200 lbs. lighter and has a 33% smaller footprint than its predecessor.
  • BigBelly is made in the USA!
  • The standard black machine is made with recycled ABS plastic.
  • Some of the high profile BigBelly locations are:
    • Fenway Park (home of The Boston Red Sox)
    • Boston's Faneuil Hall
    • Baltimore Inner Harbour
    • The Alamo in San Antonio, Texas
    • Chicago Millennium Park
    • Harvard University
    • Walden Pond (of Henry David Thoreau fame)

MIT Teams Up with Eni for New Solar Research Center

MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) of Cambridge MA has teamed up with Italian energy company "ENI" to begin a solar research center. The new research center debuted on May 4th and is called "Solar Frontiers Center." It will focus on developing advanced solar technologies without receiving government subsidies.

Excited about the possibilites, MIT President Susan Hockfield said "This center has the potential to fundamentally transform how the world produces and uses energy." No small ambition there!

Italian oil and gas company "Eni" is seeking to expand it's involvement in the research and production of solar technologies. Teaming up with the brainiacs at MIT is for them a match made in solar tech heaven. Eni CEO Paolo Scaroni is highly impressed with MIT's commitment in this area and believes that if just 10% of MIT's tech advances go into production that "this research will change the world." He has backed up his beliefs with a 5 year commitment and a $50 Million dollar investment.

The new Solar Frontiers Center will also study hydrocarbons, methane hydrates, and transportation options to name just a few technologies. The aim is to transform the energy system to deal with the ever changing technologies that will be developed in the coming years.

Insuring The Solar Power Industry

The solar power industry is similar to many other industries. Theft of installed solar panels, solar panel and water heater installers get injured on the job, panels not performing properly, etc. The need for insurance is as important as any other high profile industry that's starting to experience growing pains.

Along with panels not working properly or even installed properly and installers getting injured on the job, the theft of photovoltaic panels is on the rise. In the 2008-'09 time period at least 10 wineries in California's Napa Valley were the victims of "panel-thieves." The solar bandits abscond with at least 40 to 50 panels per "job" and they can be valued at $1000 each for new panels. Schools also are starting to see a rise in panel theft.

One company that knows too well the downside and risks associated with the solar industry is "Solarinsure." Solarinsure is an insurance company that provides all types of protection to the alternative energy industry in particular, the solar power industry.

Everything from commercial solar panel financing to solar installation warranty coverage, wind energy farms and insurance for the companies who run large solar plants.

The solar power industry is growing every year and many new start-ups have just begun. If you've got a solar power related company or are thinking about starting one in the near future be sure to take the time to assess your risk and protect your employees and asset's. Do a lot of research online as well as contact solar related companies and trade associations.

Companies like Solarinsure and the national solar trade association SEIA or  Solar Energy Industries Association which has information on how to get started in the solar industry can help you get started in the right direction.
