Solar Power Costs-One Way to Finance Solar Installations

Here's an interesting article from the Cape Cod Times about a couple who were concerned that an installation would simply cost too much. Full solar installations can run as much as $40,000 or more. Even with rebates and incentives that's still too steep for a lot of homeowners.

The couple mentioned in the article found out about "SunRun" solar home financing and took advantage of their program. SunRun isn't an installation company but it does offer financing for homeowners who qualify for their programs. It currently takes about $3,000 to get started for the average homeowner.

But, there's one qualification from SunRun that must be met and that's that the home installation must meet an 80% efficiency standard to qualify for rebates from the state. Rebates are how SunRun makes it's profit. In other words your home's roof has to face the sun most of the day without typical obstructions such as trees, signs, and other buildings.

SunRun purchases the entire solar panel system for homeowners and then takes care of it including maintenance, insurance, monitoring and any repairs that might be needed. SunRun doesn't install the solar panel array but can guide owners to reputable installers and help with the details along the way.

The homeowner signs a purchase agreement that will stabilize the cost of their electricity bill for approximately 18 years. SunRun owns the solar panel system but the homeowner can relax while SunRun take care of the details.

The homes are still connected to the grid just in case of insufficient sunlight or solar system failure and they're charged normal rates by local utilities.

This particular couple in the above article can expect to save over $21,000 in the coming years assuming electricity rates continue to rise.

Find out more about financing solar installations here at SunRun.

British Solar Power Companies Under Scrutiny

Some British solar power installing companies have come under scrutiny recently regarding undesirable selling tactics and poor customer service.

Customers are complaining of high pressure sales tactics and misleading financial information by solar thermal installers. These companies promised exaggerated savings from going solar as well as using high pressure sales methods such creating a sense of urgency. Telling leads that they had to buy right now or the sale would end immediately and they would have to pay a lot more later on.

Apparently consumer watchdog group "Which?" has been monitoring and reporting on the industry. The Renewable Energy Association when told of the complaints will investigate the firms in question.

Nothing wrong with sales but almost everyone resents high pressure sales tactics and it's unethical to quote misleading figures to customers of course. The solar installation industry is a relatively new industry and is going to have growing pains in every country where it's operating.

Some people resent nanny-type watchdog groups but somebody has to monitor industries to keep them honest. Honest ethical companies will rise and the scammers will fall away-shakeouts are inevitable. The solar industry being no different than any other obviously.

Homes Doubled Solar Electricity Output

Twice as much electricity was produced by Americans with solar installations in 2009 than 2008. Even in a down economy the solar electricity output is growing due mostly to federal incentives and rebates.

Currently, solar electricity provides less than 1% of America's total energy output.

The cost of pv modules has dropped 40% from 2008.

The United States ranked 4th in solar installations behind Germany, Italy and Japan.

Samsonite Charges Up Your Luggage

Everyone knows Samsonite as a provider of luggage and travel bags. Now Samsonite luggage will include the ability to charge up your electronics using their luggage.

Samsonite has chosen solar panel manufacturer "Ascent Solar" to provide small solar panels for their new solar charging carrying cases. They've been working with Ascent Solar to design cases that are lightweight but will be able to charge small devices such as cell phones, GPS navigators and media players. Ascent makes thin-film photovoltaic modules that provide the flexibility needed to integrate into a small carrying case.

One of the first solar powered carrying bags by Samsonite is the "Messenger" carrying bag that will probably retail in the $150 to $250 range.

Because of thin-film photovoltaics and similar technologies we'll be seeing small flexible solar panels integrated into other common household and recreational products we use on a daily basis.

Xtreme Solar Panel Testing!

Underwriters Laboratories is opening up centers around the world to test the strength and safety of solar panels. Solar panel manufacturers typically pay $50,000 USD to have their products tested by Underwriters Laboratories in an effort to have them U.L. certified as safe for home and commercial use.

Testing can last as long as 6 months and the panels are subjected to extremes in temperature and pressure. Underwriters Laboratories testing methods include using pneumatic guns to shoot circular ice cubes (mimicking hail), subjecting panels to extreme heat sources, as well as freezing temps to see if they can deal with real world weather conditions.

In year 2000 approximately 20,000 panels were installed in the United States. In 2008 that number jumped to 520,000 according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Many homes in the U.S. are made with wood and solar installations require electrical components that can ignite resulting in large property losses or losing an entire home. Although, fires resulting from solar panel installations usually involve technical mistakes made by installers and not panels suddenly catching on fire.

Panel manufacturers will market the UL certification as an endorsement for their product as well as credibility to their safety claims.
