Solar Bill of Rights

Rhone Resch is the CEO of the Solar Energy Industry Association and he has declared that there should be a "Solar Bill of Rights" for citizens and the solar power industry of the United States of America.

So far there are 8 rights and they include:

* Americans have the right to use solar power in their homes
* They have the right to connect their solar power system to the grid using uniform national standards
* The solar industry has the right to sell it's power across the new 21st century transmission grid.

Anyone visiting has the right to sign their petition and become an "Energy Patriot" as they call them.

Here are the rights and the link on the bottom to the petition at Solar Bill of Rights.us

Solar Scorecard-Solar Industry Watchdog

Solar Scorecard is a solar power industry watchdog that keeps a close eye on solar power companies that do and don't self-monitor and recycle when it comes to their own products. Ironically, even though solar power is green lots of the panels are made from materials and substances that contain harmful materials. When dismantled in a low-tech unprofessional way, exposure to the harmful compounds can adversely affect the health of those doing the dismantling.

PV panels can contain toxic substances such as indium and lead. When non-solar industry people dismantle these panels and store them or discard them they are being exposed to harmful substances. There are reports of people who dismantle these panel systems getting sick from exposure to high levels of these toxic compounds. They aren't professionals so they don't realize they're exposing themselves to these strong substances.

The manufacturing process also exposes industry workers to chemical compounds that raise questions about worksite safety. Thin film chemicals and compounds are being used for the first time in many instances and the short and long term affects on the health of those who work with these materials is yet to be determined.

A survey shows solar power industry companies want there to be industry standards for production, reporting, the taking back of dismantled panels and recycling.

Read more about the solar power industry waking up to the need for standards and monitoring at Solar Scorecard.

Los Angeles Gets Serious About Solar Power

Even though Los Angeles California has approximately 300 sunny days a year to it's name the high cost of solar installations has made it difficult for Los Angelinos to jump on board the solar trend. Couple that with a lack of solar panel and thermal heater installers and you have an odd lag in solar electricity development in America's second largest city.

An expected yes vote to increase by 5% the electricity rate is expected to pass without the city council needing to vote on it. Although they could decide to do so. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is losing an estimated $6 a week and is hoping the increase will make up for the shortfall as well as provide extra monies to develop wind farms and repay solar panel users.

The Mayor of Los Angeles Antonio Villaraigosoa is taking steps to make sure solar panel manufacturers are welcomed in L.A. along with the thousands of potential green jobs they could bring with them. He also plans to offer incentives that would encourage Los Angelinos to buy solar installations from local installers and manufactures.

Read more details on the push to solar power up L.A. at the New York Times.

PlanetSolar-The World's Largest Solar Powered Boat

German boat building team Knierim Yachtbau has built the largest solar powered boat in existence. Called "PlanetSolar" this boat is skippered and managed by Raphael Domjan and Gerard d'Aboville. The boat debuted last month and the planned official launch is in April of this year. The boat cost $24 Million to build.

The boat is a Catamaran that measures 100 ft x 50 ft., can get the speed up to 15 knots and holds up to 50 passengers. It's multihulled and is topped with 500m of photovoltaic solar panels

PlanetSolar has an interesting futuristic shape and was 13 months in the boatyard being constructed and designed. The boat building team wants PlanetSolar to further solar power technology using unique design and technological advances no watercraft has seen to date.

Immo Ströher, owner of the multi-hull boat, wanted above all to emphasise the technological significance of the event: "Each step in the PlanetSolar project is a step further in the technological development of renewable energy sources. Thanks to ambitious projects like this scientific research is making progress."

PlanetSolar will be on a world tour which is planned to launch in 2011.

Main site and info including signing up for their newsletter can be found here at PlanetSolar.org.

Here's a nice slideshow of the unveiling in Feb. '10 at PlanetSolar.

Colorado Bill-Possible 23,000 Jobs in 10 Years

Denver Business Journal is reporting that a bill (HB 1001) passed the Colorado state legislature that may create a possible 23,000 jobs in the solar power industry within the next 10 years.

It would require XCell Energy to get 30% of it's power from renewable sources the journal is reporting.

The bill would require that state utilities get 3% of it's energy from rooftops and commercial lots that function as small to mid-sized solar power plants anyway.

HB1001 next heads to their state senate for a vote.

Solar Powered Flexible Threads

Ideal Star a Tokyo based company has invented a way to infuse threads with solar cells. The layers of the threads are coated so they claim there's no need for expensive equipment to manufacture them.

They hope to eventually progress their solar threads to make flexible fabric that could be used as clothing or curtains. For this to happen they have to figure out a way to make the threads longer.

They have a 5 year view of this so this is drawing board technology right now.

Ideal Star's Flexible Solar Threads here at Headline News.

Speaking of Solar Curtains, an architect by the name of Sheila Kennedy has come up with her own version of them. She envisions using them as part of a "soft house" that would incorporate these curtains as a way of using solar power to heat a home.

Additionally, back in 2005 a Swedish company invented their version of a solar curtain called an "Energy Curtain."

Seen here at Talk to My Shirt.

It's taking a long time but eventually we'll be regularly incorporating solar powered technologies into homes as a standardized construction process.
