Bloom Box-The Bloomin' New Energy Source

So, the "Bloom Box" is the new black in alternative energy! K.R. Sridhar is the inventor of the Bloom Box, a group of fuel cells stacked together to form a new alternative energy source. Sridhar puts oxygen on one side of the fuel cell stack and fuel on the other side that forms a chemical reaction that constantly produces energy.

Large companies like eBay, Google, Walmart and Fedex are already using and experimenting with the Bloom Box. The cost is high-$700k to $800K for a shiny new Bloom Box. There have been glitches that Sridhar has had to fix and he claims he makes quick business of it.

eBay's Donahoe says that they have 5 Bloom Boxes on their lawn that run on bio-gas from landfill waste. So far the boxes have saved them over $100,000 in electricity costs.

Here's one of the articles on Bloom Boxes at CBS News.

Mitsubishi-New Records in Solar Cell Conversion Efficiency

Mitsubishi Electric has announced it has set two records by reducing resistive loss in solar cells. It's converting solar energy in silicon pv cells at a higher rate. Mitsubishi says it's achieved a 19.3 percent efficiency rating for photoelectric conversion of a silicon pv cell.

The other record was for an improvement in the efficiency rating of an ultra-thin polycrystalline silicon pv cell. Efficiency improved from 17.4 to 18.1 percent in improved efficiency. Results were confirmed by a national technical institute in Japan.

All of this leads to being able to better capture more infrared rays that would just pass through these pv cells without being able to make use of them.

Mini Solar Powered Sensor

Researchers at the University of Michigan have created a mini sensor that draws its energy from micro sized solar panels as well as heat and or movement. The sensor is 0.10" by 0.14" by 0.03".

The sensor only needs one nanowatt to operate-that's one billionth of a watt. Most of the time it would be in sleep mode and only waking to record movements or changes. They're thinking possible uses would be inside the human body to monitor head and eye pressure, tumors, environmental changes, building and bridge monitoring.

Solar is Tops with Angel Investors

Green power start-up are winning the favor of investors lately. They promise a shorter quicker path to profitability than some more traditional industries. Solar power focused start-ups are the winner in the new green eco-investor stakes with biofuels, wind, and smart grid related businesses fighting for attention and money.

A company I posted about a while back "Solyndra" filed an IPO in December of '09. They make cylindrical solar panels which are cleverly designed and if things go well with investors they could be a major player in the green energy sector of the market.

Solar All Through The Night

“Solar thermal power with storage will soon be cheaper than new coal-fired power stations according to US Department of Energy projections." This bit of info from an Australian site called "Beyond Zero Emissions.org." This is an organization of over 200 groups of Aussies who believe in getting to the point of using 100% renewable energy by 2020.

They have a radio show, discussion groups, political campaigns, etc. in an effort to bring about a severe reduction in the use of energy resources such as coal.

Here's a link to their article informing fellow Aussies about the use of solar thermal power or "Baseload"as they're calling it. By using molten salt storage to create steam to run a turbine which provides energy during the night as well as the day. Many people are still not aware that this technology exists. They only hear about solar panels on residential rooftops and fear cloudy days make solar power weak and undependable as an energy source.
