Europeans Developing Space Based Solar Power Technology

Europe's largest is seeking partners to help get a solar power mission into orbit. EADS Astrium is keen to prove their concept with a demonstration mission. A successful mission would lead to more funding and improvements in technology to show how placing solar cells on large satellites in space and beaming back the energy to earth is doable without accidentally frying anything. They hope to get into launch mode in the coming decade.

Big Jump in San Diego Solar Inspection Fees

The city of San Diego has raised it's Permit Fees to have an inspector check out a solar rooftop installation from $93 to $565. Rather than being on the low end of inspection fees in the state of California, San Diego now ranks second highest in the state behind National City, just south of San Diego. National City's inspection fees are a whopping $595.

Carl Mills from the Sierra Club says fees more than $324 are excessive. But, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders says the hike was needed to cover the administrative costs to do the inspection. Sanders did say that in a few months residents will be offered low cost loans for solar installations that they can pay off through their property tax bills.

Still, I'm sure many residents will be quite unhappy with this raise in inspection fees. San Diegans knows how difficult it can be to get inspectors to come out in a timely manner for typical home inspections anyway.

More at the San Diego Tribune's site SignOnSanDiego.

*** Note-I received a note from Kurt Newick for the Sierra Club. I goofed. San Diego's permit fees are the 2nd highest in San Diego County and not the state! There are many cities in California with higher fees than the current permit fees for San Diego.

Thanks to Kurt for the correction!
