Electric Vehicle Recharging Station for Frankfurt Germany

MARLBORO, Mass.--Evergreen Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq: ESLR), a manufacturer of STRING RIBBON™ solar power products with its proprietary, low-cost silicon wafer manufacturing technology, announced today that its panels are being used to provide the electricity for a new electric vehicle battery recharging station in a high-traffic area in Frankfurt, Germany. The solar “fuel” station provides free battery charging for small-scale electric vehicles including Velotaxis, Segways, electric bikes and scooters.

The station contains six charging ports all of which receive their power from the Evergreen Solar panels located on the building’s roof. The installation is located in a major shopping district allowing people to power their vehicles while they shop. On a hot sunny, summer day the station will produce approximately 21 kWh of electricity and enough annually to power 115,000 kilometers of travel for the average e-scooter. The cost of the installation was €65,000 and was shared by the project’s partners Ralos GmbH, Mainova AG, traffiQ GmbH, Umweltforum Rhein Main e.V., Frankfurter Sparkasse, Velotaxi M. Graf, Rossel-Display GmbH & Co. KG and the Goethe Gymnasium, a high school in Frankfurt.

“This new solar ‘fuel’ station will serve as a model for the transportation industry and is a major step forward in helping promote environmentally-friendly transportation,” said Peter Rusch, Evergreen Solar’s director of marketing and sales for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. “As a company that produces solar panels delivering the most electricity with the smallest carbon footprint, we feel a project like this one is very much in line with our brand and our overall mission.”

The charging station became fully operational on March 31, 2009. It is open to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Solar Cooker Wins Climate Challenge Award

Norwegian born John Bohmer did a little redesigning of a typical solar oven and won the 2009 Financial Times and HP Climate Change Challenge. He collected the $75,000 dollar award for his effort and credit from his kids for spending time showing them how to construct it. John's one of the cool dads who spends time with his kids showing them fun and useful things to do.

This particular solar oven design has been tapped to be mass produced in Nairobi Kenya and distributed throughout the 3rd world. A possible 2.5 million of these box ovens can be produced each month. The materials cost around $5 to produce the simple but effective solar cooker.

Blurb from "Fast Company": "Other finalists in the Financial Times competition include Carbonscape (an industrial microwave that "fixes" carbon sucked out of the atmosphere), Deflecktor (a lorry (truck) wheel cover that reduces drag), Mootral (a feed additive for cows that curbs methane production), and Evaporating Tiles (an indoor cooling system that evaporates water within hollow tiles). Ultimately, though, the Kyoto Box won out because of its potential for cheap mass manufacturing and the ability to affect billions of lives.

A profile of the Kyoto Cooker is here at the Financial Times.

Planned: America's First Solar City

Florida Power and Light will be running will be running the world's largest Photovoltaic Power Plant for the new solar city "Babcock Ranch." Babcock Ranch is the name of the residential development being built near Fort Myers FL on a 17,000 acre parcel by Kitson & Partners. An estimated 19,500 energy efficient homes will be built and certified green as well as office buildings and retail space.

More then half the city (17K acres) will be made into protected open green space. Solar panels needed to run it will be located on 350 of those acres and FPL's 75 megawatt solar generator will potentially produce more than enough electrical power to run the city. In the beginning stages and for the foreseeable future the city will run on conventional power during nighttime hours.

The cost of the solar facility is $300 Million and the cost to FPL customers to fund this will mean an added 31 cents to their bill. The residents of Babcock Ranch as well as business owners will be able to monitor and control their energy useage as they'll have access to an integrated "smart grid." There will be homes built for blue collar workers as well as luxury homes for the well-to-do.

Kitson and Partners know that the success of this new solar city will depend on the economy picking up. It's hoped people who believe in the power of alternative energy will choose their housing over traditional residential communities. The economy of the city will be partly sustained by the new "green jobs" that will be created to run, maintain and upgrade the citie's technology.

The state legislature and Public Service Commission have to approve of this plan and upgrade renewable energy arrangements for Kitson and Partners in order to make their planned community economically feasible. If they get their approvals and changes, groundbreaking for 75-megawatt plant may start later this year and construction on the actual residential areas sometime next year.

The rest of the story can be found at the Miami Herald.

MIT's "Eleanor" The Solar Car

The folks at MIT should be proud. They given birth to "Eleanor." Eleanor is the solar car MIT will race in Australia in October of this year in the "World Solar Challenge" a mind numbing 7 day 3000 km race in the Australia's outback.

She can get up to approx. 50 to 55 mph without straining herself but it they want to "drain" her battery she could go up to 70 to 80 mph. Eleanor has a 1200 watt capacity and weighs less than 500 lbs which allows her sleek aerodynamic design to help her speed down roads just as fast as any gas guzzler.

Says Physics major George Hansel "Our battery pack is composed of more than 600 cells from laptop batteries. They are lithium-ion cells and they give us an equivalent of about 6 to 7 times that of a normal car battery but is only twice to three times as heavy."

My Fox D.C. has a video (on the left side of the page) of Eleanor in all her glory HERE.

Top 5 Solar Stocks to Check Out

If the extremely volatile stock market hasn't scared you away yet and you're one of these people who have investing money, you might want buy some solar.

Solar has always been, is and will be the future of energy technology progression because the sun ain't going nowhere, if you know what I mean. Some, of course will argue the wind, coal and even oil ain't going nowhere either for a long time. We need all of those technologies and resources also, but, since we're solar fans we concentrate on sun-based energy and technology here.

There are some big names who have invested in solar stocks for a reason. They know over the long haul they'll keep rising as the technology improves and the heretofore uninterested develop an interest. Countries around the world are going to back solar installations and that will fuel solar stocks in the years to come.

David Fessler of "Seeking Alpha" has chosen these solar stocks as his top 5 to invest in:

* First Solar

* Evergreen Solar

* Canadian Solar

* Ascent Solar

* Energy Conversion Devices Inc.

Check out David's solid arguments for investing in solar stocks (with a long term view of course) here at his blog at Seeking Alpha.
