The Sun Shines on Binghamton's New Parking Meters

Binghamton University in Binghamton New York has gone solar with it's parking meters! The meters are now powered by rechargable solar batteries, a change from the old 9-volts they use to use. Campus security is happy to not have to dispose of hundreds of 9-Volt batteries too.

To make things even easier on students and faculty, the meters except $1, $5 and $10 dollar bills also as well as coins. The meter services 100 cars and is easier for people to use than the traditional meters.

Here's a short video of meter installation at News 10.

Intel Wonders Considers Solar for Datacenter

A parking lot on top of one of Intel's datacenters is being solarized with a 10 killowatt photovoltaic system. They plan on diverting at least some of the solar power from the system to use for their datacenter in Rio Rancho New Mexico. The plan would have to include storing energy as the servers need to run 24/7 and the sun ain't out 24/7.

Intel also has a 100 killowatt system powering a facility in Oregon as well.

Solvatten-Water Cleaned by The Sun

Solvatten is Swedish for "sun water." The Swedes have come up with a device that uses solar technology to purify water. It's aptly named "Solvatten" and is being used right now mostly in third world countries to help clean water for drinking and hygienic purposes.

The faq that you download from the site spells out what can be done with the device. It takes approx. 3 to 5 hrs. for the water to heat up to the point it kills bacteria. If the water is for drinking then the device is put in the shade to cool. In 3 to 4 hours bacteria can be eliminated from turbid water. On a cloudy day, 5 to 6 hours.

They suggest it can be used twice a day and Solvatten lasts approx. 5 years.

They claim a special technological design that stirs up and filters the water. No bad taste and the materials are FDA approved. The technology can also be scaled up to meet the needs of public entities like schools, health clinics, as well as for tourism and disaster relief.

You can see how this would be useful in hurricanes and earthquakes. As it upgrades and is more widely distributed it would be great for disaster relief centers to have lots of these on hand.

From their faq:

* "How will SOLVATTEN reach the market?

SOLVATTEN is suitable for local water, hygiene and sanitation programs and will
initially be distributed through International Organizations. The aim is to find local
entrepreneurs and through them and maybe also by local production reach the local
market to gain acceptance for the new technology.

• What are the advantages with SOLVATTEN?

SOLVATTEN can be a water-purifying tool in vast areas around the world where you
do not have electricity but polluted water and a lot of sun!
You gain health advantages, save time (especially for women who are commonly
responsible for the water) and save the environment.

And at last, SOLVATTEN can hopefully inspire people to invent more uses for solar
energy in other areas."

Currently distribution is aimed at local organizations that help out in third world countries.

Check out the solar water purifying device here at Solvatten.

Here's a demo of how the device works Here.

WiTricity is Around The Corner...

How would you like to walk into your home and have your mobile phone immediately start charging with no effort on your part? If techs and tech companies have their way, that will be happening before too long.

The plans are to have "wireless" homes with energizing computer desks and gadgets powering up with laser beams.

From U.K.'s The Guardian: "Experts believe this is just the beginning and that eventually wireless electricity - dubbed "WiTricity" by some - could do for battery life what WiFi did for the internet. In a world without wires, laptop users in cafes and airport terminals would be inside an "electricity hotspot" and no longer have to delve past legs, bags and furniture in search of an awkwardly located socket.

Company CES has developed technology that turns electricity into a laser beam that's invisible. The heated beam shoots across the room and hits a solar cell turning into electricity.

The new beaming technology is said to not pose a threat to our health as when an object crosses it's path, the beam shuts down for 1/1000 of a second and then starts up again. Right now this tech is for small electronic gadgets but they have plans to scale it up for laptops and desk tops.
