Here Comes Saudi Arabia.....

Not only are the Saudis the kings of oil but they are also looking at the title "Kings of Solar." Saudia Arabia is in the middle of the "Sun Belt" which encompasses the areas of northwest Africa all the way to eastern Central Asia. Europeans are aiming to become very chummy with the Saudis in order to tap into the tremendous amount of solar power that can be obtained there.

The Europeans have formed The "Trans-Mediterranean Renewable Energy Cooperation", or TREC. Their aim is to build a "transmission supergrid." This supergrid will funnel the energy from solar thermal power plants and wind turbines through long distance power lines to supply energy to Europe. In the last few weeks the heads of Britain and France have publically backed the plan.

The problem is this is going to be a Very Expensive undertaking. They'll have to get all their political ducks in a row as well as acquiring mega funding from investors. The plan also has detractors such as Arnulf Jaeger-Walden who is a well known European energy authority. He said that less than 0.4% of of the solar energy that falls on the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East would satisfy all of Europe's energy needs.

But, then you have a representative of the Algerian government who runs a government backed energy company who claims "Our potential in thermal solar power is four times the world's energy consumption, so you can have all the ambitions you want with that."

It looks like solar power generation is and will become even more political, perhaps someday rivaling oil with world governments making claims and claiming stakes.

3 Day Flight for Solar Powered Plane!

British technology company "QinetiQ" has set a world record by managing to keep their Solar Powered Plane called the "Zephyr" flying for 3 and a half days. The unmanned solar powered plane flew for 82 hours and 37 minutes. The standing record was 30 hours 21 minutes set by "Global Hawk" in 2001.

The UK Ministry of Defence has funded the development of Zephyr to date and has partnered with the US Department of Defense (DoD) under their Joint Capability Technology Demonstration. These joint projects are being done to meet the needs of our armed forces across the globe especially in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Zephyr is an ultra-lightweight carbon-fiber unmanned aircraft that can be and was launched by hand! By day it flies on solar power generated by silicon solar arrays no thicker than sheets of paper that cover the aircraft's wings. By night it is powered by rechargeable lithium-sulphur batteries which are recharged during the day using solar power.

The Zephyr's flight trial took place in the harsh Sonora desert near Yuma with hot temps around 113F. The successful flight showed the capability of the Zephyr to be used for real-time battlefield surveillance and communications.

The development of the Zephyr means future use for earth observation and communications for military and civil use.

Positive Forecast for Solar Power Plants

Here's an article that emphasizes how implementing solar plants especially throughout the Southwest can greatly decrease the cost of energy.

New technologies also get a mention such as "BrightSource Energy" company funded by Google to the tune of $100 mil. and is working on technology to produce cheaper simpler mirrors that focus the sun's rays on a "tower receiver" that will heat up water to a whopping 1000 degrees F.

Here's a promising forecast from the CEO of Acciona Solar Power:

“You could supply the entire US with the sun power here in a little piece of the Southwest,” says Dan Kabel as he strolls beneath a row of trough-shaped mirrors. Mr. Kabel is chief executive of Acciona Solar Power, which owns the $266 million Nevada Solar One project. “As fossil fuel costs rise, this plant is unaffected. “If America doesn’t do this, if we don’t install many more of these clean solar-power systems, we’ll just end up seeing a lot more fossil-fuel plants instead.”

Cotton and Castor Beans Reducing the Cost of Solar

Solar company "BioSolar" is a company that produces "bio-based" materials from renewable plant sources. This technology reduces the cost per watt of producing solar cells. The company has made a new "backsheet" which is a protective covering used in the production of solar cells. They produce their "Biobacksheet" product from these plant resources. Most backsheets are made of petroleum-based materials resulting in a higher cost.

For the past year and a half BioSolar has managed to keep the "secret" to their ability to produce solar cells at a lower cost. They revealed their new technology at a solar symposium in San Diego. The plants they are using to get the cost down are cotton and caster beans. They have patents pending on the different processes they use and as a result feel more comfortable revealing their information publicly.

USA's First Solar Highway On Tap

The state of Oregon will be hosting America's first "solar highway" near Portland. Construction has begun on the highway and will target the interchange between interstates 5 and 205. A strip of land the size of two football fields will host the 594 panel array and light up the interchange by the end of this year.

Countries such as Germany and Switzerland have had solar lighting their highways for more than 20 years so the U.S. has some catching up to do in this area.

The project is being designed, constructed and installed by "Solar Way." The Department of Transportation is not allowed to sell excess energy generated by the panels back into the local grid however.

Unfortunately, that is the case with some communities also. The argument made by some of the local energy companies is that allowing a home to sell electricity back to the grid would make the home a power generation plant! But, not all energy companies think that way and there are communities that allow individual homeowners to sell their extra energy back to the grid.

Another Homeowner Goes Photovoltaic

Here's a an article from Time Magazine Online featuring a homeowner who has gone rooftop solar. The cost of a rooftop array is a barrier for many people who would love to install panels on their roofs. Studies show the average cost of a rooftop system to be $20K to $30K and add 10 yrs to 20yrs to pay it off.

Manhattan Beach California resident a Mr. Letvin says he pays $550 a month for his new array as compared to the $300 a month on his energy bill. But, he'll be getting a $16K rebate in the form of federal and state tax incentive for his solar rooftop system.

So if you pay $20K up front and get a hefty rebate from the state and feds it's a no-brainer except for the large upfront payment you have to make to get started.

Getting Off The Grid in Alaska

Here's a case study of an Alaska resident turning to solar power and wind turbines to get away from high energy bills. He says he hasn't had to get rid of necessary appliances and have kept the same lifestyle they had before going solar and wind.

They received a $2000 tax deduction for installing the home solar system and have saved $1000 so far on their energy bill.

One of the motivations for going solar was concern for their business equipment. They were very concerned with "Brown Outs" and "Blips" in their region. They run a bed 'n breakfast and more than $10k of their phone and computer equipment got fried.

Wife Sandy Bowers said "We haven't changed our lifestyle any -- not in the least," she said. "We leave the computer on all day."

This is an example of people making the effort to transition to solar and wind and getting realistic good results. They still must pay down the $24K it took to install the new system but with a combo of tax deductions, saving on energy bills and not having to replace "fried" equipment-it'll be worth it.

"Probably The Most Important Single Discovery of The Century"

The guys at M.I.T. (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) have made quite a discovery. They have developed a catalyst that is able to generate oxygen from a glass of water by splitting water molecules. His fellows are bragging that this could be a way to store energy from the sun more cheaply and efficiently.

This new process has been discovered by Dr. Daniel Nocera and his team. They are mimicking "Photosynthesis" which is the way plants use sunlight to turn water into useable energy. The new cheap and easy to use catalyst can produce a reaction that produces Hydrogen Gas. The gas becomes a fuel. The produced Hydrogen then "can be burned or used to power a fuel cell to generate electricity on demand."

One German scientist called this discovery "probably the most important single discovery of the century."

Scientists are emphasizing that this new cheap catalyst will allow the energy to be produced at a lower cost than first expected.

As mentioned in the article, any new process or discovery will take some time for it to find it's way to the consumer.
