Xantrex Introduces Solar Panel Monitoring Device for Homeowners

Xantrex, an inverter maker, debuted a device to be used by homeowners with solar panels installed. The device called the "Xantrex Gateway" is designed to monitor the energy output of solar panels and transmit that data to the homeowner's pc through a home Wi-Fi connection.

Homeowners with small-scale solar power installations will now be able to tell how their solar panels are working. The more energy they produce, the larger the rebate these owners will receive from local utility companies.

The "Gateway" can be configured to send automated reports to homeowners and notify them if there is a problem.

Xantrex featured their products at "Globalcon", the convention for networking conference for those in the alternative energy field.

First Solar-Powered Satellite Still Flying at 50

Space.com has an article on "Vanguard" the first "Solar-Powered" Satellite and the oldest satellite still orbiting the earth. Vanguard is celebrating it's 50th year of orbiting service. It was launched March 17, '58 and has done 196,990 of the earth!

Vanguard weighs only 3lbs and is 6-inches in diameter. Unfortunately it's "solar cells" died in 1964 but scientists still continue to study the effects of the sun, moon and atmosphere on orbiting satellites. In fact, the life expectancy of Vanguard has increased to 2000 years from the original estimate 200 years, it's held up so well.

Solar Metering Makes Panels Economical

Tucson Arizona is going to be implementing "Net Metering". Homeowners and business owners who have solar panels installed on their roofs will now be "metered". Any extra electricity theses panels produce will be compensated for by the utility companies such as Tucson Electric Power.

There are also no limits on the energy these panels can produce.

This should be a motivator for more businesses and homeowners to go solar now-they're bills will be officially monitored and they'll be compensated for producing excessive energy that can be used by their neighbors. Using solar will relieve some strain on utilities during times of excessive energy use as in heat waves also.
