Some of us have seen the Frito-Lay "Sun Chips" commercial or even eaten these sunny wheat snacks. The company has several plants that produce the chips but it's their Modesto California plant that actually has a Solar Thermal Energy system in place helping to product the snacks.
Frito-Lay had a 4 acre solar collector field built in order to place a large array of concave mirrors that track the sun's rays. A black glass tube carries solar heated water (450 degrees) to a boiler system that generates steam that helps to cook the wheat and heat the cooking oil used to process and produce the snacks.
